Break the To field on purpose

The write-first, address-last ritual has one honest hole, and most of a working inbox lives in it: replies. Hit reply and the address is already loaded — often a dozen addresses — and everything you type is one slip away from leaving.

The fix people converged on is cheerfully crude. Type a short piece of nonsense into the To or CC line, and the email cannot send until you remove it. A few bare letters is enough. Mail clients check that every recipient is a valid address at the moment of sending, so your zzzz acts as a jammed round: click send — by accident, by shortcut, by reflex — and the client refuses with an error instead of delivering your half-thought to the whole thread.

What makes it better than deleting the addresses is what it doesn’t cost. The real recipient list stays exactly where it was — nobody retyped, nobody forgotten, the reply-all chain intact. The nonsense entry is the only thing you ever touch.

And it has a quiet second gift: the moment you go to remove it, the client has already stopped you once. That error prompt is a built-in checkpoint — people who use the trick describe it as their cue to read the message one last time from the top before clearing the jam and letting it go.

It works on fresh emails too, if the empty-To habit doesn’t suit you. Break the field first, write in peace, fix it last. The send button can’t do anything you haven’t decided.
